Maybe you’re tired of multiple trips to the aesthetician to keep your skin smooth and hair-free. Have you ever considered laser hair removal yet? Here are the things you should know before giving it a try.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
Most testimonies from people who tried laser hair removal are happy for its efficiency, effectiveness and convenience. It’s not as painful and time-consuming as waxing, plucking and even sugaring. It’s a type of long-term solution for removing unwanted hair. But does it really work?
1. Quick Sessions
You will need several sessions to remove hair. Each session however will need only a few minutes.
2. No Irritation
The problem with other hair removal procedures is that they can cause allergies, irritation and even ingrown hair. Laser hair removal gets rid of all those problems.
3. More Savings
Although laser hair removal is generally more expensive than other treatments, you will realize that you have saved more in the long run because you don’t have to keep coming back later.
4. Any Part of the Body
It can be performed on any part of the body and there’s no need to grow the hair to a certain length in between sessions.
What to Expect from the Procedure
Unfortunately, the advertisements that promise permanent hair removal are misleading. Laser hair removal can only reduce growth of unwanted hair. This procedure is also more effective for people with dark hair and light skin because the laser targets the melanin, the pigment responsible for color.
Side-effects can also be expected including swelling, itching and skin discoloration. You will need to make sure the person who does the procedure is licensed and experienced. Follow-ups are needed if there are serious side effects such as burning and blistering.
Laser Hair Removal Procedures
Before you start worrying about how many session you need, you have to consult with the doctor or aesthetician about the procedure. Depending on the assessment, you will need at least six sessions to remove hair. There are different light or laser sources used today, so ask about these options.
You will be asked to stop the other hair removal treatments including shaving and waxing at least six weeks before the first treatment session.
Before the session, you will be given protective eyewear and clothes and a cold gel or a cooling device will be applied to your skin. The area you want to be treated will then be exposed to pulses of light. The laser targets only the hair follicles and destroys it by heating it up, but your skin might look red after the session.
Your next visit will be scheduled between four to six weeks. You should avoid using deodorants, antiperspirants and applying other cosmetics on the areas treated. You will also be given creams and advised to avoid sun exposure for a week after each session.
